DC area tops US income list; average fed employee makes $126,000 a year

According to government figures Washington D.C. has surpassed San Jose as the wealthiest U.S. metropolitan area. Federal workers total compensation averages more than $126,000 per year. Also contributing to D.C. placing first is that it has the highest concentration of lawyers in the nation.

The Census Bureau’s figures have shown the U.S. capital has also overtaken Silicon Valley with having a total household income of $84,523 last year. The average household income for 2010 was $50,046.

The figures show that despite the country being in a full blown depression the nation’s political and financial classes are prospering.
